Surgical Treatment of Peri-Implantitis : The Swedish Concept

Workshop

Peri-implantitis is defined as a pathological condition around dental implants characterized by inflammation in the peri-implant soft tissue and concurrent loss of supporting bone. Peri-implantitis is unfortunately a prevalent condition that, if left untreated, can result in implant loss. The etiological factors implicated in peri-implant infections are similar to those involved in periodontal diseases. As a result, the goals of peri-implantitis treatment should include resolution of peri-implant soft tissue inflammation and stabilization of the level of osseointegration. This is only possible if bacterial biofilms and retentive factors such as excess cement and calculus are eliminated from the implant surface, resulting in a
biologically acceptable surface favorable to wound healing.

Based on strong scientific evidence, this workshop will present the Swedish therapeutic concepts in the management of peri-implantitis. It will concentrate on flap design, key soft-tissue manipulation features, and suturing procedures that are critical in achieving the best results in surgical peri-implantitis treatment. The technique of soft-tissue volume grafting at peri-implantitis sites will also be demonstrated and practiced during the training.

Each participant will be (1) working on a unique specially designed typodont mimicking perfectly 3 different clinical situations and peri-implantitis severity, and (2) performing 3 different surgical techniques from respective to reconstructive approaches with bone and soft-tissue grafting procedures.
