Peri-implantitis is a bacterial biofilm-mediated inflammatory disease affecting the function of soft and hard tissues surrounding dental implants. The untreated disease features an accelerating progression pattern, which ultimately leads to implant loss. Peri-implantitis, represents a growing public health problem due to its high prevalence (19.5%) and the associated consequences (implant and implant-supported prosthesis loss), including dental care costs, which are substantial. Numerous peri-implantitis treatment protocols with clinical efficacy have been documented, including nonsurgical, surgical, resective, regenerative, and combined approaches. However, the most effective management protocol across the general population or in specific patient groups has not been identified. My objective is to summarize the evidence-based recommendations for individual interventions used in managing peri-implantitis, based on the best available evidence and expert consensus.
